The missionary Samuel Marsden first introduced apple trees to New Zealand in 1819. Orchards in Kerikeri flourished and were soon replicated throughout the country.

In 2008, over half the national export crop came from Hawke’s Bay and one-third from Nelson. The other main areas were Central Otago and Waikato.

About 60% of New Zealand’s pipfruit crop is exported, 12% is consumed domestically, and the rest is processed, mainly into juice.

This is batch #2 from Urban Lumberjack – sourced with the help of Richard Brown from the sunny and productive fruit bowl of Hawke’s Bay. This variety came to the end of its commercial life and I was lucky enough to rescue it from the pre-winter burn off.

Measuring 2.5m tall and 20cm at the base, they’re big trees. It’s important to note that these trees have been spray-free for a year as they were being taken down without a crop.
